Our recent attempt to measure the far ultraviolet (FUV) extragalactic background using the spaceborne imaging telescope FAUST has brought to light similarities in both the intensity and power spectrum of signals from galactic cirrus and the expected extragalactic background. We discuss our measurement technique and our results, and critically review earlier attempts to make this measurement at optical and FUV wavelengths. We conclude that separating the galactic and extragalactic signals using similar techniques will be extremely difficult with existing instrumentation.
