[30.06] An H$\alpha$ Emission Line Survey of Galaxies in the Bootes Void

As part of a program to investigate the nature of galaxies in voids, we have obtained H$\alpha$ emission line images of a sample of galaxies in the Bootes void. Our sample includes galaxies identified from follow-up observations of objective prism surveys and IRAS identifications. The images were obtained 1991 April using the NASA/Goddard Fabry-Perot Imager behind the University of Arizona's 90-inch (2.3 m) telescope located on Kitt Peak. Images were taken in both H$\alpha$ and a nearby continuum region so that we can correct for the contribution of the continuum to the H$\alpha$ image.

Data have been obtained for 9 galaxies. Results for an interacting pair (CG692/693), one a Seyfert 1 and the other a spiral galaxy undergoing widespread star formation, have been reported previously (Weistrop, et al. 1992,Ap.J.L.,396,L23). The remaining galaxies include an edge-on disk system (1540+5013), a spiral galaxy (1428+5255), and four galaxies with bright knots of hydrogen emission in and/or near their nuclei (1530+4332, CG359, CG657, CG538). The H$\alpha$ luminosity for CG 657 is 2.26 x $10^{42}$ ergs s$^{-1}$, for $H_{0}$ = 50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, in good agreement with the value found by Peimbert \& Torres-Peimbert (1992, A\&A,253, 349). This luminosity is significantly brighter than that of the most luminous normal galaxies and corresponds to a total star formation rate of about 20 $M_{\sun} yr^{-1}$.
