[44.06] The Caltech--Jodrell Bank VLBI Survey: a Progress Report

The Caltech--Jodrell Bank VLBI survey (CJ survey) extends the Pearson--Readhead survey (Pearson et al., these proceedings) to weaker sources with 1.3~Jy $> S_{\rm 5~GHz}>$ 0.7~Jy. The complete flux-density limited sample includes 135~sources, of which 92 can be mapped with Mark~II VLBI. We have made maps at both 1.6~GHz and 5~GHz of most of these. The main object of the survey was to obtain images of sufficient quality to enable us to: (1) Classify the objects via their radio structure and to identify any new types of objects. (2) To identify unusual objects (which are not simple core-jets) for further study. These include gravitational lens candidates, compact symmetric objects, compact steep spectrum objects, etc. (3) Provide a sample large enough to make statistical tests of cosmological evolution, unified schemes, etc. (4) Identify candidate superluminal sources for which follow-up observations may be able to measure a velocity, to provide a larger sample for statistical studies of superluminal motion.
