[54.06] GHRS Observations of Highly Ionized Gas in the Milky Way Halo

Interstellar absorption from highly ionized species of C IV, Si IV and N V is observed toward three stars in the Milky Way halo. The gas is believed to be located at 1.3 +/- 0.3 kpc above the disk. High resolution data taken with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) show that all three ions are present in the halo gas, but the velocity information in the data present uncertainties as to the relationship between the N V-absorbing gas, the C IV-absorbing gas, and the weakly ionized or neutral gas seen in species such as Si II, S II and H I.
