[109.03] H-R Diagrams Constructed from IUE Low Resolution Spectra for Small and Large Magellanic O and B Stars

M. Neubig, F.C. Bruhweiler (Catholic Univ.)

We have examined the complete IUE dataset of low resolution spectra of O and B stars in both the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. For IUE spectra of adequate exposure levels, we have derived ultraviolet classifications for O and B stars in the Clouds by combining UV spectral line diagnostics with available Galactic and Magellanic Cloud standard star spectra. This classification scheme is designed to yield spectral types that correspond closely to those deduced from visual spectra. The UV classification system further refines the visually derived classifications by making use of IUE flux distributions, the common distance to the stars for each Cloud, and previously derived optical magnitudes and colors. This work represents the first phase in constructing a metallicity grid based upon UV spectra from the Milky Way and the Clouds. This grid will be used with population synthesis techniques to model UV spectra of star-forming regions in external galaxies.
