[18.03] HST Spectra of the Hubble-Sandage Variables in M31 and M33

R. M. Humphreys, K. Davidson (U. Minn), N. R. Walborn (STScI), Th. Szeifert, B. Wolf, F-J Zickgraf, O. Stahl (Heidelberg)

the Luminous Blue Variables (Hubble-Sandage variables) in M31 and M33 with the FOS on the Hubble Space Telescope during 1992 and 1993. These UV spectra are combined with groundbased optical and infrared photometry and spectra to determine the IS extinction, temperature, and total luminosities, and mass loss estimates for these highly unstable stars. These stars are placed on the HR diagram and compared with the few known LBV's in our galaxy and the Clouds.

Var. B and Var. C in M33 appear to have been observed during the eruption or outburst phase. AE And has some peculiar spectroscopic characteristics in common with eta Carina.
