[52.06] Observational Consequences of Winds in Low Mass X-ray Binaries

T. Kallman (Code 665, NASA/GSFC, Greenbelt, MD 20771)

X-ray heating of the companion star or disk in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) can cause strong wind emission if the gas temperature exceeds the local escape temperature. This may be associated with several observable effects, including changes in the spectrum from the photosphere of the star or disk, absorption or scattering of X-rays in the wind, line emission by the wind, and emission from wind relic material accumulating in the vicinity of the system. In this paper the rates/efficiencies for these processes will be discussed, and will be compared with the known properties of LMXB's.
