[60.07] UBV Photometry and Ultraviolet Excesses of Faint Field Stars at the South Galactic Pole

Xinjian Guo (Yale Astronomy Department)

We present the results from a new complete survey of UBV photometry with the CTIO 4-m telescope to B = 22.5 in a small field (about 25 arc-minutes in effective radius) near the South Galactic Pole and the globular cluster NGC 288. The photometry was made mainly based on the UBV CCD observation with the CTIO 4-m in 1993. The B, V data were also consisted of the BVR CCD observation with the CTIO 0.9-m in 1992 and J (IIIa-J/GG385/UBK-7) and F (IIIa-F/GG495/UBK-7) photographic photometry from the plates taken at different epochs from 1981 to 1992 with the CTIO 4-m.

This UBV photometry is an important part of the Galactic structure and kinematics study at the SGP direction. Ultraviolet excesses and photometric parallaxes are derived and will be used to study the stellar space and metallicity distributions as function of vertical heights and, combined with the absolute proper motions, to determine the kinematics of different Galactic components--Thin Disk, Thick Disk and Halo.
