[64.01] Observations of the QSOs from the Automated Plate Measuring machine (APM) multicolor survey for bright z $>$ 4 objects

L.J. Storrie-Lombardi, R.G. McMahon (Institute of Astronomy), M.J. Irwin (Royal Greenwich Observatory), C. Hazard (University of Pittsburgh)

The APM multicolor survey for bright z $>$ 4 objects, covering 2500 deg$^2$ of sky to m$_r \sim$ 19, has resulted in the discovery of 27 QSOs with z $\ge$ 4. Optical spectrophotometry at 5\AA\ resolution has been obtained for 24 QSOs and infrared JHK photometry for 10. We will present results of the first detailed study of these objects including emission line equivalent widths; continuum emission slopes longward of Lyman$-\alpha$; D$_A$, the depression of the continuum shortward of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission; and composite spectrum analysis. We shall present a comparison between the z $>$ 4 APM QSOs and the z $>$ 4 QSOs from the grism emission survey by Schmidt, Schneider, and Gunn.
