We outline a program of star counts for 84 selected fields, each of 16 square degrees, from the APS Catalog of the POSS I survey. The APS Catalog contains data in two colors, blue and red, for all POSS I fields with $|b| > 20^{\circ}$. The program fields are a subset of the catalog chosen to allow a systematic probe of stellar components external to the thin disk. They represent a uniform, complete data set in two colors over a statistically significant portion of the sky. The total area of sky covered in this program exceeds the area of star counts published to date by a factor of $\sim 20$. For several of these fields we show sample color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions.
We present preliminary results for the axial ratio of the stellar spheroid from star counts in selected fields at different galactic latitudes. Using a combination of modeling and simple comparisons we derive a value for the axial ratio.
