[23.04] Molecular and Atomic Gas in the Starburst Nuclei of M82 and NGC 253 at Arcsecond Scale

M. S. Yun, J. Carlstrom (Caltech), P.T.P. Ho (CfA)

High resolution ($\theta=2\sim3''$) observations of the two prototypical starburst systems M82 and NGC 253 using the Caltech Millimeter Array and the Very Large Array (VLA) are presented. The gas distribution is highly clumpy at 10 pc scale in both galaxies, and the gas kinematics show strong non-circular characteristics. The comparisons with the optical and X-ray images suggest a strong obscuration of the central activites by the gas and dust seen along the line of sight.
