[39.01] The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO): Scientific Capabilities

M. Kessler, R. Laureijs and N. Trams (ESA)

An overview is presented of the European Space Agency ISO mission, including spacecraft, orbit, and telescope and focal plane instruments. Spacecraft specifications and performance figures (pointing, sky coverage, etc.) are discussed to the extent that they impact astronomical applications. Performance data (resolution, spectral coverage, sensitivity, etc.) are given for the four instruments: the 3-18um camera CAM, the 3-200um spectro-photometer PHOT, the 3-45um short-wavelength spectrometer SWS, and the 45-190um long-wavelength spectrometer LWS.
