[41.01] Radiation-Hydrodynamical Studies of Biased Galaxy Formation

P. Ricker, D. Lamb (U Chicago)

Measurements of the amount of x-ray-emitting gas in the Coma cluster suggest that the baryonic fraction of the cluster is more than twice that permitted by nucleosynthesis constraints for a flat universe (White et al. ~1993). David et al. ~(1994) have recently extended this finding to nine more clusters. If these clusters are a representative sample of the universe, then $\Omega_0$ cannot be unity. If they are not representative, then some dissipational process must be acting to concentrate baryons within the clusters. In either case, the interactions of galaxies in the process of formation are expected to have a significant effect on the evolution of the power spectrum of density fluctuations at small scales. We are developing a radiation hydrodynamics code for massively parallel supercomputers in order to study these interactions in the context of young clusters and groups of galaxies. We report on the progress of our work and tests of our code.
