[48.02] The HII Regions of the Local Group Galaxy WLM

P. Hodge, B. Miller (U. WA)

The dwarf irregular galaxy WLM contains 21 recognizable HII regions. A photometric and spectroscopy study shows that the detected HII regions range in luminosity from logL = 36.0 to 37.1 ergs/sec and in size from 20 to 100 parsecs. The luminosity function is roughly a power law with a slope of -1.2 and the diameter distribution fits an exponential with a scale length of 34 pc. Both of these parameters are typical of low-luminosity dwarf irregular galaxies. Spectra of the three brightest HII regions show a surprising amount of difference in line ratios and derived physical properties.
