[49.04] Discovery of a dust disc in the radio-jet galaxy NGC 6251

Earl J. O'Neil, Jr., Roger Lynds, David S. De Young (KPNO), and members of the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera IDT (WF/PC)

A short-exposure test picture made with the Planetary Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope reveals what appears to be a dust disc surrounding a bright, unresolved nucleus. The major and minor axes of the projected disc are approximately 1.2 and .35 arcsec, respectively. The orientation of the disc with respect to the radio jet, the axes of symmetry of the galaxy, and previously reported dust lanes will be presented.
