[63.01] Lifting the Veil of the Anticenter Zone of Avoidance

C.A.Pantoja (Univ. of Oklahoma)

At low galactic latitudes it becomes very difficult to distinguish galaxies from stars and other diffuse objects. In some fields absorption can be so large as to cause total obscuration of galaxies. We report on an HI survey to study the distribution of galaxies in the Anticenter region of the Zone of Avoidance. We completed a catalog of galaxy candidates by visual inspection of the POSS E prints in the area 4h $\leq$ $\alpha$ $\leq$ 8h and $0^{\circ}$ $\leq$ $\delta$ $\leq$ $37^{\circ}$. HI measurements have been made for a sample of objects from this catalog. The 21cm line observations serve to confirm their identification as galaxies and obtain redshifts, although structure and morphology remain very uncertain for these objects. The results of this survey will be presented in combination with previously measured "available" redshifts as an exploratory tool to study large-scale structure in this zone.
