[9.09] A Search for Steady and Transient 100 MeV Emission from Selected X-Ray Binary Systems

D.J. Macomb (NASA/GSFC/USRA)

Gamma-ray emission from X-ray binary systems in the TeV energy range have been reported for several systems such as Cygnus X-3, Vela X-1 and Hercules X-1. Only Cygnus X-3 has been reported as being a source in the 100 MeV region. The EGRET instrument onboard the Gamma-Ray Observatory has the ability to not only test for steady emission above 100 MeV from these sources, but in some cases is also sensitive enough to detect transient events lasting around 30 minutes if the reported TeV flux values are extrapolated down to the range of hundreds of MeV using a reasonable power law. We present limits on both the steady and transient emission from several candidate systems and discuss the results in the context of previously reported detections.
