[10.07] Procedures for Retrofitting CCDs to Small Telescopes --- Progress Report I

R. Lee Hawkins (Whitin Observatory, Wellesley College)

Many institutions are currently equipping their small telescopes with CCD cameras in order to pursue projects that were until only recently done at large observatories. Traditionally, users of CCD cameras are located mostly at large research institutions or national facilities where large amounts of engineering support and design expertise are available. These design and support facilities are not enjoyed by most small colleges now retrofitting CCDs to their existing telescopes. While none of the solutions proposed here are unique, there has never been to our knowledge a comprehensive, detailed examination in the literature of the necessary techniques for retrofitting CCDs to small telescopes in order to obtain accurate photometry. This is the first progress report on efforts to outline the problems facing small observatories, and document solutions to these problems.
