[101.03] Barium Abundances in Metal Poor Giants

Henry G. Roe (Williams College), Catherine Pilachowski, Taft Armandroff (NOAO/KPNO)

The abundance of barium has been determined in a large sample of metal poor giants drawn from the sample of Bond (1980, ApJS, 44, 519). Atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, microturbulence) have been determined in a systematic manner to provide consistent results over the range of temperature ($ 4000 \leq Teff \leq 6500K $), luminosity ($ -2.8 \leq Mv \leq 1.5 $) and metallicity of stars in the sample, and an empirical relation among temperature, luminosity, and microturbulence has been determined. Our results confirm a large scatter in the barium abundance as a function of metallicity.
