[104.05] Efforts to Detect Young Globular Clusters in Interacting and Cooling Flow Galaxies

John S. Gallagher (U. Wisc), Jon A. Holtzman (Lowell Observatory), WFPC2 IDT

We are attempting to understand conditions under which globular clusters form. WFPC1 observations of young clusters in NGC 1275 suggested that the formation of these objects might be related either to the presence of an interaction or to the presence of a cooling flow. We have imaged two interacting galaxies (NGC 3597 and NGC 6052) and two cooling flow galaxies (A496 and A1795) with WFPC2. We find good candidates for young globulars only around NGC 3597. This suggests that the presence of a cooling flow at the current time is not associated with the formation of massive star clusters. This result is consistent with the idea that dense, rich star clusters which can evolve into globular clusters mainly form in regions where star formation rates are high.
