[104.07] Large-format CCD Photometry of the Globular Cluster M5

We present BVI CCD photometry of over 50,000 stars in the globular cluster M5, including a calibrated color-magnitude diagram. Two aspects of the data are especially noteworthy. First, the large field of view of the data (16' by 16' centered on the cluster) allows us to examine the cluster's stellar sample for radial trends. We specifically examine the radial distribution of blue stragglers in the cluster out to a radius of 8' in order to constrain possible formation mechanisms. Second, the frames were exposed so as to capture stars from above the horizontal branch to more than 2 magnitudes below the main-sequence turnoff in all frames. This allows us to minutely examine the luminosity function in the vicinity of the subgiant branch for excesses of stars relative to canonical stellar evolutionary theory that have been seen in other clusters.
