[108.16] HST Images of Small Scale Structure in Seyfert and Markarian Galaxies

J.W.MacKenty, C.H.Nelson (STScI), S.M.Simkin (MSU), R.E.Griffiths (JHU)

We present HST images of the nuclear regions of 50 Seyfert and 50 non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies from the volume and luminosity limited sample defined in MacKenty (1989; Ap.J. 343, 125). These short exposure, ``snapshot'', images were obtained with the WF/PC-1 Planetary camera in the F785LP filter during 1992 and 1993.

With a resolution exceeding 100 pc, we find a variety of interesting small scale structures in some of these galaxies. These include second nuclei, small (sometimes misaligned) bars, and condensations. These structures are suggestive of the mechanisms which have been proposed for transporting material into the inner regions of these galaxies.
