[109.17] Deep $K'$ Imaging of $z \sim 1$ Quasars

S. E. Ridgway, A. Stockton (IFA, University of Hawaii)

We discuss the results of deep $K'$ imaging of a complete sample of $z \sim 1$ 3C quasars, for which the corresponding sample of radio galaxies has been previously studied by Rigler et al. (1992). The 3C sample in this redshift range provides the only sizable matched samples of radio galaxies and quasars at an epoch (or radio power) for which the radio-optical alignment effect has been observed. We find nearby companions to $\sim$ 1/3 of the quasars and nebulous matter underlying another $\sim$ 1/3.
