[116.02] Al Variations in Globular Clusters: Tests of Deep Mixing Scenarios

Matthew D. Shetrone (UC Santa Cruz)

First results of a systematic survey of aluminum abundances in globular cluster giants are reported. Star to star variations in the aluminum abundances for bright giants in M13 ([Fe/H] = -1.5) and M5 ([Fe/H] = -1.2) have been detected. The Al to Na correlation and the Al to O anti-correlation predicted by the deep mixing theory are confirmed. However, the spread in aluminum abundances within M13 is much larger than the spread predicted by deep mixing. No star to star variations of aluminum are found in the relatively metal-rich cluster M71 ([Fe/H] = -0.8).
