[14.03] Looking for the Sources of Damped Ly $\alpha$ Absorption Lines in QSO Spectra

We have made HST Wide Field Camera II and Faint Object Spectrograph UV observations of three QSOs with 21 centimeter absorption. High column density Ly $\alpha$ absorption has been detected in all three QSOs. One of the images clearly shows a luminous spiral galaxy within 2 arcseconds of the QSO. The QSO peak intensity is approximately three orders of magnitude more intense than the absorber candidate. Since the Wide Field Camera undersamples the image, a special technique was required to remove the dominant QSO contribution. These images and the QSO removal technique are discussed.
