[18.10] Kinematics of Extended Emission Line in Distant Radio Galaxies

P.J.McCarthy (OCIW), S.A.Baum (STSCI)

We present long-slit spectra of the extended emission-line regions of 3CR and 1Jy-class radio galaxies with redshifts between 0.2 and 2.5. The data were obtained with the Lick 3m, Kitt Peak 4m and Palomar 5m telescopes. We have analyzed the spectra and extracted the velocity fields of the strongest emission lines. Large Velocity gradients are common with the typical amplitude being 800 km s$^{-1}$ and extreme cases reaching 1500 km s$^{-1}$ on scales of 100 kpc. A few systems show velocity curves suggestive of simple rotation, but most are complex.
