[18.16] New CO and CI Measurements of the Cloverleaf Quasar

Richard Barvainis (MIT Haystack Obs.), Linda Tacconi (MPI Garching), Robert Antonucci (UCSB), Danielle Alloin (CNRS/Obs. Paris Meudon), Paul Coleman (N.M. Mining and Tech.), Philip Maloney (JILA)

New observations of the Cloverleaf, the gravitationally lensed broad absorption line quasar at z = 2.56, have been conducted using the IRAM 30-m telescope at Pico Veleta. In addition to the CO J=3-2 line previously reported (Barvainis et al 1994, Nature 371, 586), we now have detections of the J=4-3 and J=7-6 lines of CO and an upper limit on $^{13}$CO(3-2). We also solidly detected the fine structure line of carbon, CI($^3P_1 - ^3P_0$), and have a probable detection of CI($^3P_2 - ^3P_1$). These data will be presented along with preliminary interpretation of the CO line ratios and implications of the CI lines.
