[25.05D] Flaring gas layers : A tool to determine the shape of dark matter halos

Rob P. Olling, J.H. van Gorkom (Columbia University)

We have developed methods to determine the thickness of the neutral Hydrogen layer from high resolution HI observations for both edge-on and somewhat inclined spiral galaxies. We will show that the such determined gas layer widths can be used, under a certain set of assumptions, to infer the the shape of the dark halos of such systems.

We observed several systems, of varying inclination, with high to intermediate resolution and will discuss some results. Furthermore we will discuss the viability of the proposed method.
