[5.04] Some Computer Animations Used in Introductory Astronomy

Shawl, S. J. (University of Kansas)

Numerous astronomical concepts can be well illustrated using animations in place of static figures. A variety of microcomputer software packages are available that allow relatively easy production of animation sequences. This paper will demonstrate, using the program Cinemation on a Macintosh, some simple animations that have been produced for such concepts as epicyclic and retrograde motion, parallax, blinking of plates, spectral line formation, the inverse square law, and so on.
