[5.06] SAO Summer Intern Program for Undergraduates

E.Bohlen, K. Dow, C. Jones, A. Prestwich (SAO)

The SAO Summer Intern program was offered for the first time in 1994 for 13 students. Undergraduates, from colleges and universities around the country, spent 10 weeks at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, in Cambridge, MA. Their primary activity was to carry out scientific research with guidance from an SAO scientist. Program activities included an Orientation, Computer Workshop, two ``Ethics Evenings,'' informal lunches, and a weekly colloquia series. Each student worked on an individual research project during the program that culminated in a research report and a talk during an ``Intern Symposium.'' Field trips were taken to the Oak Ridge Observatory in Harvard, MA and to the Maria Mitchell Observatory in Nantucket, MA. Several participants will present posters at the January 1995 AAS meeting.

The SAO Summer Intern Program is funded by the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Applications for the 1995 program will be accepted until 1 March. This poster describes the 1995 program.
