We report gas and stellar kinematics from spectroscopic data of 40 early-type galaxies. The sample was originally selected for not showing strong evidence of ionized gas. Nevertheless, the analisis detects significant [O III] $\lambda\lambda$ 4959, 5007 emission in about 21 of these galaxies. In many galaxies this emission is extended and, in most of these cases, the gas and stellar kinematics are highly decoupled. This result is consistent with the idea that the ionized gas in elliptical galaxies is neither residual nor shed by the evolved stars, but recently adquiered gas. A certain degree of star formation may be occuring in some of the emission regions.
