[57.03] Phenomenology of Medium-Scale CMB Anisotropy

We use simulated maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) generated with a cold dark matter model to investigate the phenomenology of differential scans at instrumental resolution $0{{\rlap.}^\circ}5$ to $1{{\rlap.}^\circ}5$. Contrary to expectation, high-contrast peaks (``point sources'') are a common feature; the recent MSAM detection of a Planck-spectrum unresolved source is in good agreement with standard CDM. We investigate the statistical properties of simulated maps as a function of sky coverage, angular resolution, and instrument noise. The sensitivity to the Doppler peak depends primarily on the fraction of the sky covered and only secondarily upon the angular resolution and noise level.
