[75.14] Multiphase Simulations of Starburst Galaxies

Anatoly A. Suchkov, Vladimir Berman, Timothy M. Heckman (Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore), Dinshaw S. Balsara (N.C.S.A., Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

Previous simulations of starburst galaxies have focussed on multidimensional multifluid simulations, Suchkov, Balsara, Heckman and Leitherer (1994) Ap.J. However, observations of starburst galaxies show that they have a substantial amount of dust and molecular gas towards the center. In this work we extend the previous simulations to include a cloudy phase in the hydrodynamics. Tests of the multiphase hydrodynamics are presented. It is then applied to starburst galaxies. Outflow rates and X-ray emissivities from multiphase simulations are then compared to those from the single phase simulations.
