[84.04] Numerical Study of Ambipolar Diffusion

Michael L. Norman and Dinshaw S. Balsara (N.C.S.A., University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

Analytical studies reported in this volume ( see "Analytical Study of Ambipolar Diffusion" by D.S.Balsara and M.L.Norman) have shown that ambipolar diffusion is a very efficient damping mechanism for fast magnetosonic waves and alfven waves though not for slow magnetosonic waves. The physical motivation for this problem has already been reported in depth in the above-mentioned study. Here we carry out a numerical analysis of these waves. The numerical analysis also serves as a good way for calibrating the trustability of numerical codes for doing full turbulence studies.
