[85.12] A Photometric study of short period eclipsing binary star V719 Her

The Behlen observatory 0.76m telescope CCD photometer has been used to obtain 347 observations of the short period eclipsing binary V719 Her. The observations were done using the V and R bandpass filters on 6 nights in 1993. Previously published light elements and the present 6 determinations of eclipse timings of minimum are used to determine a new epoch and a more accurate orbital period of 0.4009827 days. There is no published spectral classification for V719 Her however, based on the color, V-R = 0.391 (Schmidt 1991, AJ, 102, 176), we estimate it to be F5.

Photometric solutions have been obtained using the 1993 version of the Wilson-Devinney model. The adopted solution indicates that V719 Her is a W UMa type contact binary. The mass ratio, q = (m$_{c}$/m$_{h}$) = 0.29222, suggests that V719 Her is a W UMa system with type A configuration. Both components have similar temperatures however, their luminosity appear to be unequal. Contact systems with periods less than 0.5 and spectral class F5 are suspected to be zero-age contact stars.

Since our photometric solution shows that the luminosity difference between the components is very large, we suspect that V719 Her is most likely a single line spectroscopic binary. However, spectroscopic study of this system is suggested, so that V719 Her can be better analyzed. This research was supported in part by NSF grant AST88-15806.
