[87.03] Highlights of Supernova Studies from HST

Robert P. Kirshner (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)

The Hubble Space Telescope has proved to be a powerful tool for investigating supernovae. A combination of scheduled and Target-of-Opportunity observations has provided important new data on SN 1987A in the LMC, SN 1992A, SN 1993J in M81, and SN 1994I in M51. The Supernova INtensive Study collaboration has combined these data with ground-based work and with theoretical analyses to enrich the understanding of supernova explosions and of their interaction with circumstellar matter. Both the ultraviolet capabilities of HST and its outstanding resolution have contributed to the effectiveness of this work. New data on the debris and the circumstellar rings of SN 1987A will be presented, as well as novel observations of the late-time light curve of SN 1992A, and the UV spectrum of SN 1993J and SN 1994I.

The SINS project is supported by NASA through grant GO-2563.01-87A from the Space Telescope Science Institute which is operated by AURA under NASA contract NAS 5-26555.
