[88.03] The Non-Detection of Gamma-Ray Emission from X-ray Selected BL Lacs and Radio-Quiet Quasars

J.R. Mattox (University of Maryland \& USRA)

The EGRET/CGRO telescope has detected $\sim$40 radio-loud quasars and radio-selected BL Lacertae objects. No detections of radio-quiet AGN have been reported. In order to fully examine this question, we have searched the EGRET phase 1 full-sky-survey for E$>$100 MeV $\gamma$-ray emission from the class of X-ray selected BL Lac objects and from the 200 brightest radio-quiet quasars. The preliminary result is that neither class is detected. This implies that apparent $\gamma$-ray emission is intimately linked to apparent radio emission, both probably occurring in a relativistic jet. If X-ray selected BL Lacs are radio quiet because the radio beam is narrower than the X-ray beam, any strong $\gamma$-ray emission must also be narrowly beamed.
