[91.03] CO Observations of the Highly Collimated Outflow NGC 2264G

We report new JCMT CO J=2-1 observations of the spectacular bipolar outflow known as NGC 2264G. We have made an extensive, well sampled map of the outflow at relatively high spatial resolution which improves upon and extends previous observations of this object. We find the outflow to be significantly more extended than indicated by previous CO mapping. Our observations confirm earlier results which indicate that the kinematics of the flow exhibit a "Hubble Law" pattern, that is, the velocity of outflowing gas increases in a linear manner with distance from the flow origin. Indeed, the highest velocity gas is found at the ends of both outflow lobes where little or no low velocity outflow material is found. However, the velocity fields of the blue and red shifted lobes display significantly different signatures which appear to be related to structural variations in the ambient cloud. This result suggests that the observed structure in the velocity field of this outflow is strongly influenced by surrounding ambient material. At the same time structure observed in the velocity field of the ambient cloud indicates that the outflow has had a significant influence on the ambient gas. We calculate the energetics of the outflow and confirm earlier suggestions that the mechanical luminosity in the outflow is comparable to the radiant luminosity of the driving source. The implications of these observations for the theory of bipolar outflows will be discussed.
