[10.03] Time Resolved Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of RU Peg and RX And

Deano Smith, Mario Mateo (Univ. of Michigan), Paula Szkody (Univ. of Washington)

We present analysis of time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variables RU Pegasi and RX Andromedae. Spectra in the waveband 8000-8700\AA \ were obtained using the goldcam detector on the NOAO 2.1m telescope at Kitt Peak at a time resolution of 23 minutes. Both stars were observed over at least one complete orbital cycle. We have used the these data to obtain orbital velocities for both the late-type secondary star and the white dwarf primary using the Na~I absorption lines and a broad component of the Ca~II emission lines, respectively. In both systems, we also identify a narrow component in the Ca~II lines which we attribute to heating of the side of the secondary facing the hot primary. These narrow lines are in phase with the Na~I lines which come unambiguously from the secondary star. These data are used to obtain system orbital parameters, including the mass ratios, inclinations, and the individual component masses. We further consider whether the observed heating of the secondary is due to x-rays from the primary by comparing the x-ray and narrow-line Ca~II fluxes.
