[2.05] Statistical Consulting Center for Astronomy

J. L. Rosenberger, M. G. Akritas (Statistics, Penn State), E. D. Feigelson (Astro \& Astrophys, Penn State)

The Statistical Consulting Center for Astronomy (SCCA) has recently been created to provide prompt high-quality advice on statistical and methodological issues to the astronomical community. Questions can be sent by email to scca@stat.psu.edu, and answers are posted on WWW node http://www.stat.psu.edu/scca/homepage.

A selection of questions and answers are presented including: likelihood ratio tests for testing variability of faint X-ray sources; multivariate clustering algorithms and codes for locating inhomogeneities in Galactic halo stellar kinematic and metallicity data; correlation coefficients for multivariate censored data; discussion of permutation and bootstrap resampling for hypothesis testing; and linear regression to bivariate data with known measurement errors.
