[37.02] Photometry of Type Ia Supernovae at Van Vleck Observatory

W. Herbst \& A. S. Billeb (Wesleyan U.)

We present VRI photometry of four supernovae (SNe 1992G, 1992bf, 1993Y and 1993ae) obtained with the 0.6m Perkin reflector at Van Vleck Observatory on the campus of Wesleyan University. An effort has been made to correct the photometry for possible contamination by galaxian light. This involved obtaining images with the identical equipment one or more years after the appearance of the supernova. These correction images were adjusted to match the seeing on any particular supernova image using a gaussian convolution. After appropriate scaling, the correction images were subtracted from the supernova images and aperture photometry performed in the usual manner. Background corrected light curves will be presented and discussed. The data are useful for discussions of the homogeneity of Type Ia light curves, which which is a central issue in whether or how they can be used to establish the extragalactic distance scale. Data which have not been properly corrected for galaxian light could yield systematically erroneous light curve shapes, so the issue is particulary important if a shape-dependant method is employed to obtain peak absolute magnitudes.
