[39.08] High Resolution X-ray Image of the Sombrero Galaxy

J. Juda and G. Fabbiano (SAO)

We present the result of the ROSAT HRI observations of NGC 4594, the Sombrero galaxy. We detect a relatively bright source at the nucleus of the galaxy, and four other discrete sources also possibly associated with NGC 4594. Assuming the distance to the Sombrero galaxy is 18 Mpc, we derived the X-ray luminosity, Lx, of the central source is about 3E40 erg/sec, and Lx of the other four sources range from 0.2E40 to 1E40 erg/sec. We will discuss the import of these observations for our understanding of the nucleus of NGC 4594, and of the X-ray emissions of early type spiral galaxies.
