[7.04] Gamma-Ray Observations of Clusters of Galaxies

A. Aky\"uz$^{\star}$ (UCR), D. Bhattacharya (UCR), M.E. \"Ozel (TUBITAK, Turkey)

High energy gamma-ray data of a few selected clusters of galaxies, observed by the SAS-2 mission, were analyzed. The clusters include Coma, Virgo, A401, A754, A1060, A1367, A2142 and A2319. The 2 $\sigma$ upper limits on the emission from these clusters range from 3 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ to 3 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the energy range (35-200) MeV. We discuss gamma-ray contributions from the intracluster gas, dark matter and individual galaxies. Implications of SAS-2 and EGRET results for cosmic ray fluxes and magnetic field values are also discussed.
