Session 1 - Applied History of Astronomy I.
Oral session, Sunday, January 14
Salon del Rey Central, Hilton
Applied Historical Astronomy, the application of early astronomical records to problems in modern astronomy, has developed rapidly in recent years. It is now a subject of many facets, as the list of topics in today's program demonstrates. Historical astronomical observations - both pre-telescopic and telescopic - have played and continue to play and important role in such diverse subjects as Earth's variable rotation; supernova studies; cometary and planetary orbits; and solar variability - to name just a few aspects. In this introductory address, the progress made in some of these topics will be outlined, with reference to both source material and scientific results.
