[11.04] Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Proper Motion Survey- Cleaning up the Color-Magnitude Diagram

A. E. Schweitzer (U. Wisconsin- Madison), K. M. Cudworth (Yerkes Obs., U. Chicago)

We present the current status of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy reductions, including a proper motion cleaned color-magnitude diagram of the probable member stars. This work includes over 1600 stars measured on 39 plates spanning 42 years.

In the first part of our astrometric study of the distant satellites of our Galaxy we measured the absolute proper motion of the Sculptor dSph. Due to the better plate quality and a larger assortment of background galaxies and QSOs, we expect the uncertainty in Ursa Minor's absolute proper motion to be less than half the size of our Sculptor motion errors even though Ursa Minor is at a similar distance, roughly 63 kpc from us.
