Session 12 - Radio Galaxies, VLBI.
Display session, Monday, January 15
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
Total intensity and linear polarization images of a compact hotspot in one of the outer lobes of the high-redshift quasar 3C205, produced using the newly completed VLBA at a wavelength of 18cm, are presented. The images reveal a complex curved structure with polarization percentages frequently as high as 70%. Strict upper limits are placed on the magnitude of any Faraday effects within the source or in the surrounding material. The favored interpretation of the structure is in terms of a deflection of the incoming jet by a density gradient in the external medium. Model-dependent estimates are made of several physical parameters in the interaction, and deductions are made concerning the likely orientation and Doppler factor of the flow in the deflected jet.
