[14.07] The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)

A summary of new results obtained by the OGLE collaboration is presented. The analysis of the four years (1992-95) of the OGLE data revealed 18 microlensing events of the Galactic bulge stars. The Early Warning System to detect on-going microlensing events now works routinely and have discovered total of 8 microlensing events during the 1994 and 1995 observing seasons. There is a number of side projects utilizing the data collected for the microlensing search. The three parts of the catalog of a few thousand periodic variable stars in Baade's Window were published. The OGLE color-magnitude diagrams are used to model the inner Galaxy, including the Galactic bar.

When the Galactic bulge could not be observed we had a number of secondary targets. Three fields covering outer parts of the globular cluster ømega Cen were monitored in 1995 in a search for eclipsing binaries. We discovered 9 new variables: 5 contact binaries, 1 detached binary and 3 SX Phe stars. Another two globular clusters, 47 Tuc and NGC 288, were also monitored. Additional fields in the recently discovered Sagittarius dwarf galaxy were also observed, indicating much larger size of this galaxy that thought before. The dedicated, 1.3-m OGLE telescope is being built by the Warsaw University Observatory on the Las Campanas site. The first light is expected by the Spring 1996.
