[17.01] On the Evolution of Luminous Supersoft X-Ray Sources

L. A. Nelson, T. Wood (Bishop's U.), R. Di Stefano (Harvard U.)

Numerical calculations of the formation and evolution of luminous supersoft X-ray sources will be presented. The probabilities associated with the various pathways leading to the formation of these systems will be discussed. The method used in calculating the evolution of these systems will also be described and the observational implications will be addressed. Probability distributions of observational properties will be developed. Particular attention will be paid to the hypothesis that supersoft X-ray sources could be the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. The viability of this hypothesis will be investigated in light of some of the theoretical uncertainties associated with their formation and evolution (e.g., common-envelope evolution, the late phases of mass transfer).
