Session 50 - Active Galaxies.
Display session, Tuesday, January 16
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
Recently a number of studies of Seyfert and other active galaxies have found that properties of their hosts are linked to the nuclear activity. In particular, the bulge mass appears to play a key role in the kinematics and luminosity of emission line gas as well as the luminosity of the radio source on the kiloparsec scale.
We report on our continuing analysis of WF/PC-1 snapshot images of 52 Seyfert galaxies using the F785LP filter, a bandpass that is relatively free of emission lines. These images are well suited to examining the near-nuclear morphology of the host galaxies. By fitting standard functional forms to the luminosity profiles, our aim is to separate bulge, disk and nuclear point source contributions. The difficulty posed by the dominant nuclear point source in the Seyfert 1 galaxies and the weaker but possibly resolved nuclear continuum source in Seyfert 2 galaxies is discussed. We compare our results with those found for a comparison sample of non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies.
