Session 50 - Active Galaxies.
Display session, Tuesday, January 16
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
We study high-resolution narrow-band [OIII] images of 8 Seyfert 1 and 12 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained from the Hubble Space telescope Data Archive. Using the continuum subtracted [OIII] images we measure the Narrow Line Region (NLR) sizes of this objects and compare them with the predictions from the Unified Scheme. We find that the sizes of the Seyfert 1's NLR are much smaller than those of Seyfert 2's even taking into account inclination effects. A possible solution for this problem, which apparently contradicts the Unified Scheme, is to assume that the Seyfert 1's may have their torus axis aligned close to the galaxy plane axis.
